Brick Calculator: Standard Sizes and How the Math Works

A standard US modular brick measures 7 5/8 Ă— 3 5/8 Ă— 2 1/4 inches. When laid with a 3/8-inch mortar joint, each brick covers about 0.133 square feet of wall face. This gives us the industry-standard estimate of 7.5 bricks per square foot.

To calculate bricks for your wall: multiply wall length by wall height to get square footage, multiply by 7.5, then add 10% for waste and breakage. For mortar, divide your total brick count by 30 to get the number of 80 lb bags needed. If your project also needs a concrete footing or slab beneath the brickwork, use our concrete calculator to estimate those quantities.

Profi-Tipps

1

Always order 10% extra bricks beyond your calculated count. This covers breakage during delivery, cutting waste, and future repairs where matching brick color matters.

2

One 80 lb bag of mortar mix lays approximately 30 standard bricks. For large walls, consider buying mortar in bulk bags to save 20-30% on material cost.

3

Standard modular bricks cover about 7.5 bricks per square foot of wall when laid with 3/8-inch mortar joints. This is the industry standard estimate masons use.

4

For a single-wythe (one brick thick) garden wall, you do not need a concrete footing in mild climates, but a 4-inch gravel base is still recommended for stability.

Häufig gestellte Fragen

How many bricks do I need per square foot?â–Ľ
A standard modular brick wall requires approximately 7.5 bricks per square foot when laid with 3/8-inch mortar joints. For a 100 sq ft wall, you need about 750 bricks plus 10% waste (825 total). Our brick calculator above does this math automatically.
How much mortar do I need for 1000 bricks?â–Ľ
You need approximately 33 bags of 80 lb mortar mix for 1000 standard bricks. Each 80 lb bag lays about 30 bricks. For 1000 bricks plus 10% waste (1100 bricks), order 37 bags to be safe.
What is the standard brick size in the US?â–Ľ
The US standard modular brick measures 7 5/8 inches long Ă— 3 5/8 inches wide Ă— 2 1/4 inches tall. With a standard 3/8-inch mortar joint, each brick occupies roughly 8 Ă— 2 5/8 inches of wall face.
How much does it cost to build a brick wall in 2026?â–Ľ
Brick material costs $0.35 to $0.90 per brick in 2026 depending on type and region. A 100 sq ft single-wythe wall needs ~825 bricks ($290-$740 in materials) plus mortar (~$200). Labor typically doubles the total if you hire a mason.
Should I add extra bricks for waste?â–Ľ
Yes. Order 10% extra for simple rectangular walls and 15% for walls with many corners, curves, or openings. Brick color varies by batch, so having extras from the same batch ensures matching replacements later.
