Most landscaping suppliers sell brick by the cubic yard. To convert your project area to cubic yards, use this formula:
Our calculator also multiplies your cubic yard result by 1 tons/yd³ (the standard density for brick) to show estimated weight — essential if you are hauling the material yourself or need delivery pricing.
A standard US modular brick measures 7 5/8 × 3 5/8 × 2 1/4 inches. When laid with a 3/8-inch mortar joint, each brick covers about 0.133 square feet of wall face. This gives us the industry-standard estimate of 7.5 bricks per square foot.
To calculate bricks for your wall: multiply wall length by wall height to get square footage, multiply by 7.5, then add 10% for waste and breakage. For mortar, divide your total brick count by 30 to get the number of 80 lb bags needed. If your project also needs a concrete footing or slab beneath the brickwork, use our concrete calculator to estimate those quantities.
Always order 10% extra bricks beyond your calculated count. This covers breakage during delivery, cutting waste, and future repairs where matching brick color matters.
One 80 lb bag of mortar mix lays approximately 30 standard bricks. For large walls, consider buying mortar in bulk bags to save 20-30% on material cost.
Standard modular bricks cover about 7.5 bricks per square foot of wall when laid with 3/8-inch mortar joints. This is the industry standard estimate masons use.
For a single-wythe (one brick thick) garden wall, you do not need a concrete footing in mild climates, but a 4-inch gravel base is still recommended for stability.
