The Core Volume Formula
Almost all landscaping and construction materials are sold by volume, specifically the Cubic Yard. We calculate cubic yardage using the following industry-standard formula:
Cubic Feet = Length (ft) × Width (ft) × Depth (ft)Cubic Yards = Cubic Feet / 27
Note: When you enter depth in inches, our calculators automatically divide by 12 to convert it to feet before applying the volume formula.
Material Densities (Weight Estimation)
Volume alone isn't enough if you are hauling material in a truck or paying for freight delivery. Our calculators estimate weight by multiplying your cubic yardage by the standard densities of the material.

Standard Waste Factors
In construction, things rarely go exactly to plan. Spillage, settling, and uneven grades require you to order slightly more material than the raw geometry suggests.
For strict count materials like Cinder Blocks, our calculators automatically apply a 10% Waste Factor (multiplying the raw count by 1.10) to ensure you have enough unbroken blocks to complete your wall. For bulk materials like dirt and mulch, we provide the exact raw volume, and we recommend rounding up to the nearest half-yard when ordering.
